2009 NFL DRAFT

The Draft is only one month away, and I will be predicting  who we will draft with our first pick in the draft (#51 in the 2nd round) and later rounds in the weeks to come. Jerry Jones traded this year's first round pick in the trade for Roy Williams via the Detroit Lions. We all hope Roy can step up and become a true #1 Wide receiver for us. We have needs at Strong Safety with the departure of Roy E. Williams we wish him well wherever he ends up. We signed free agent Gerald Sensabaugh from the Jacksonville Jaguars but only for a 1 year contract. Jerry Jones and the coaching staff will see how he performs before signing him to a longer deal. Our Safety depth is thin after Ken Hamlin our FS. We could use another player at defensive tackle to spell Jay Ratliff who is coming off his first Pro Bowl.

 We also have a need for either an Offensive left guard or left tackle.Flozell regressed some this past season and is getting old. Current left guard Kyle Kosier indeed is a serviceable player but lacks mobility and has been hurt recently. The cohesiveness of the offensive line really missed him while he was injured. The jury still is out on backup guard Montrae Holland.Our Wide Receiver corps with Roy Williams, Patrick Crayton, Miles Austin, and Sam Hurd are solid if not spectacular. Isiah Stanbach the 5th WR has also been injured a lot and he could lose his roster spot if he does not have an impressive training camp. 

Other positions that I believe are solid are Qbs, Rbs, Tes, Center, Defensive End, Cornerback, OLB/ILBs, and K/P.  We will have about 11 draft picks but hopefully Jerry will do his usual wheeling and dealing to move up in the draft to get better players. Ultimately only about 5 or 6 players will make the team this year. With all being said, if I was Jerry I would draft the BPA, or Best Player Available. With the 51st pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select :

  Safety Patrick Chung from University of Oregon. He is a versatile athlete who is great in run support as well as a cover safety who hits like a brick.

You can count me as a happy Dallas Cowboys fan who is relieved Terrell Owens is no longer with us. I wish him the best in Buffalo, NY. I appreciate how hard he worked while being a Cowboy. I could never quite accept him completely. His "ME" attitude 24/7 was just too much to stomach. Tony Romo will no longer feel pressured to throw to T.O and thus will not throw as many interceptions. 

We lost a couple of good players in Free Agency this year and here is my take on our wins and losses and every thing in between. We released Safety Roy Williams and Defensive End Chris Canty signed with NY Giants (yuck). 

It also seems likely OLB Kevin Burnett will sign with the San Diego Chargers. Burnett is a good and solid outside linebacker who covers running backs and tight ends well being a fast linebacker. Our Special teams unit might take a hit (pun intended) if ace Keith Davis signs elsewhere and his departure would also thin our depth at safety. 

Here are our free agent signings:

  Igor Olshansky RDE- Igor (former San Diego Charger) will replace Chris Canty and I feel this was a very good pick up. He has similar stats compared to Canty but costs roughly half of what Canty will make in NY he can also be a better pass rusher. Grade :B+

 Keith Brooking (Atlanta Falcons) will replace Zach Thomas as ILB and he  played under Wade Phillips in Atlanta and is a solid but old stop -gap type linebacker. A plus- considered to be a good "locker -room" personality something we need and could emerge as a leader on the defense. Grade : C+

  Gerald Sensabaugh (Jacksonville Jaguars) should have a good shot at replacing Roy Williams as Strong Safety. Although Jerry Jones and company are happy to have signed the talented player, they only gave him a 1 year contract due to a few off the field issues with small firearms. 

Grade : C. Sensabaugh will have to prove himself on and off the field to become a  Dallas Cowboy in the future.
