The Dallas Cowboys defense could be a dominant one if Wade called more 4-3 defensive formations rather than the 3-4 alignment. Simply put, the Cowboys do not have enough talented linebackers to play in the 3-4. Take the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers as two good examples. Both teams have 3 talented linebackers. Baltimore's Terrell Suggs, Bart Scott, and Ray Lewis (even if he is getting long in the tooth), Pittsburgh's James Harrison (NFL Defensive Player of the year), James Farrior, and Lemarr Woodley. These are all very good players since both teams just played in the AFC Championship game.
The Cowboys have all world linebacker DeMarcus Ware who some say is the best linebacker in the NFL. They also have up and comer 2nd year LB Anthony Spencer who should have his coming out party in 2009.The Cowboys need to get their best defensive players on the field to be a dominant defense. If memory serves me correctly,DeMarcus Ware (who led the NFL in sacks), got several of his sacks and QB pressures when in the 4-3. That is 4 defensive linemen and 3 linebackers. I suggest moving Greg Ellis back to Right defensive end, Marcus Spears at Left Defensive end, and Jay Ratliff and Tank Johnson at defensive tackle. Bradie James will play middle linebacker with Ware and Anthony Spencer at the outside linebacker spots.
Jason Hatcher can be a back up at either DE or DT. Zach Thomas, Kevin Burnett, and Bobby Carpenter are capable back ups while younger players can be had in the NFL draft. In the 4-3 alignment, there will be more pressure on the opposing team's quarterback. DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer will have a clearer path towards sacking the QB. The opposing offensive linemen will have to wisely choose who to double team leaving Ware, Spencer, Ellis, or Ratliff to rack up sacks while not having to worry about being double teamed. Tank Johnson received recognition as being a DT on the Chicago Bears who play a 4-3 lineup.
If the Cowboys can have a good draft similar to last year's but focusing on defensive linemen and linebackers who can start as rookies, then they will be on the right track back to the playoffs.
